Yorktown Football made a statement on Friday night with a 35-29 win at Muncie Central. A statement? From a team that made regionals last year? Yes. It wasn’t that there weren’t any that believed that Yorktown couldn’t be competitive. It’s that Yorktown had to show it on the field. They certainly did thanks in large part to those five talented offensive linemen.

Yorktown graduated a record setting QB (Riley Neal) and record setting WR (Riley Miller) while still being ranked #10 in 3A coming into the season. That’s respect. You know what’s also impressive? Changing your entire offensive style from a year ago and dominating game 1 & 2. That’s what Yorktown has accomplished. Dawson Allen and Jordan Spangler both went over 100 yards each while combining to score three touchdowns. There was much said about the style change and how it worked. Well, Coach Mike Wilhelm and his players proved it.

Muncie Central played a good football game but what plagued them was mistakes. Penalties, four bobbled snaps, and missed tackles gave Yorktown the edge. However, it was apparent that 1) the Bearcats will be competitive 2) they’re much more fundamentally sound and 3) they have scary good talent on offense. Trenton Hatfield was much more composed in his second year as starter. Andre Wells is going to be a special back. Vince Coleman is a fantastic inside linebacker. The ceiling is high for Muncie Central.

Yorktown has their work cut out for them as they face defending state champions New Palestine on Friday. We will have the coverage starting a 7PM on Friday.
