Wes-Del at Delta-High School Basketball

When opposing coaches have described Delta, they have pointed to the size of Delta being an issue. It didn’t become an issue each of the first 10 games for the opponent until last night. Matt Norris led the Delta Eagles to a 61-52 win over Wes-Del in the first round of the Delaware County Tournament. Norris scored the first 9 points for the Delta Eagles and finished with 25 on the night. The raw 6-7 center found comfort in the defensive scheme of Wes Del and was aggressive through the entirety of the game. Kameron Slaven added 16 to the 3rd win of the season for Delta.

This one was far from easy. Wes Del was only down by 1 at the end of the 3rd quarter while Delta had leads as large as 12 throughout the first half. The gritty, no quit attitude of the Warriors kept them within striking distant until the final frame. There were plenty of “firsts” in this win for Delta. The first time Norris was the focal point of the offense. The first time Lambert controlled the pace of the game. The first time Slaven showed his total offensive game rather than just being a spot up shooter. All of these “firsts” are all things Coach Ryan VanSkyock has highlighted as goals to make this team a tough matchup. Granted it came against a 4-5 Wes Del team. However, this recipe of a game plan worked. The Eagles have certain mismatches that they need to exploit. In that regard, Delta took a step in the right direction.

Delta moves on to the semi-finals of the Delaware County Tournament to face Cowan on Friday at 6PM. The winner moves on to the finals on Saturday at 8PM.

HIGHLIGHTS TO COME….
