The experience and discipline on the basketball floor of #1 Guerin Catholic overwhelmed Muncie Central in the second half as the Golden Eagles defeated the Bearcats 64-54. On an off night for star Matt Holba, Christian Munson led the way for Guerin with 21 points while Holba still added 14 to the end score and 11 rebounds as well to make it his sixth straight double-double to start the season. The Lehigh commit had 5 all of last year.
Muncie Central was led by Phillip Corthen who had 17 points while Marcus Dukes was in double figures for the second straight contest with 15 points. Jamel Barnes had 12 all coming on perimeter baskets. The Bearcats struggled on the glass by being outrebounded 33 to 22 and the efficient Guerin offense shot 54% from the floor to just 40% for Muncie Central.
This one was close early as Barnes was the spark off the bench for the Bearcats and the lead changed hands 10 times in the first half. Guerin Catholic only led by one at the half. While the Bearcats would get close at times, Guerin Catholic always had an answer. Down the stretch Christian Munson and Matthew Godfrey led the way for Guerin and slowly put this one away. Guerin is now 6-0 and the Bearcats now are 2-3.
In high school basketball, the regular season is much like a pre-season. The record means nothing in tournament time. A 6-20 team could potentially win a state championship. Muncie Central will look positively on this experience. All season long this game will be a reminder that the Bearcats played step for step with the #1 team in their class. The talent is there. The desire is there. With a little more experience and seasoning, this team could be a very tough out in February.
